Designed to Inspire
Discover the newest building on campus, the Grimes Engineering Center, and learn about the innovative materials and technology used in its construction, the services and programs housed there, and the impact they are having on students across the campus. Rising three floors and encompassing over 83,000 gross square feet, the center was built on the existing foundation of the Bechtel Engineering Center. This adaptive reuse of the old building, as well as the exposed structural systems, serves as an inspiration hub for collaboration and learning. In partnership with the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) Center, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and architectural and engineering firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), a new shape memory alloy was developed and tested for use in the construction. The Grimes Engineering Center embodies the partnership between research, education, and industry adoption.
